The legal aspects and management of intellectual property can be defined by an agreement signed by all three parties. When a laboratory works with a company, it is necessary to conclude the agreement and to know the principles of EPFL`s intellectual property. A master`s project in the industry is a job that a student does at the end of his master`s training to apply the skills acquired during his studies. It lasts 25 weeks and takes place in the company under the supervision of a teaching assistant affiliated with an EPFL research laboratory. If necessary (and with the prior approval of the laboratory concerned on the practical and financial conditions), part of the work may take place in the school laboratory, but at least 8 weeks must be carried out in the company. As a master`s student, the monthly salary is expected to be between CHF 1000 and 2000. Note that CHF 1,700 – 2000 is the lower limit for obtaining a work permit by the Employment Agency (Vaud) for all foreign students (excluding the EU). The student is closely cared for by the EPFL teaching assistant and the company`s managers. Regular coordination meetings allow the final objective of the project to be adapted and refocused if necessary. Just before the end of the project, the student writes his master`s thesis, which is defended orally before a jury, usually composed of a representative of the company and his academic superior. Students must also submit a summary of their master`s thesis in accordance with the section`s instructions. The delivery of the master`s work must be carried out in accordance with the instructions of the MTE section, which are carried out in a timely manner.

Unlike internships, master`s projects that have been concluded in a company are not designed (supervised) by an agreement with the school in a mandatory (supervised) manner. However, if the company or the Master`s Professor/Senior Scientist wishes to sign an agreement, there is a standard contract (contact with your teacher). In general, the creation of an employment contract between the company and the student is incompatible with the academic framework of a master`s degree, especially under standard confidentiality clauses that relate to the results of the project. Unless the professor has signed a confidentiality agreement, as described in the paragraph above, the teacher must ask the student to remove the confidential portions of the report before downloading. Students who leave for an internship abroad must apply to the EPFL`s securite.epfl.ch/travel Safety, Prevention and Health (DSPS) website to benefit from the emergency assistance programme. This program provides additional assistance if necessary, but does not replace the personal insurance policies, as described above, that the student must maintain for the duration of his internship. This document is optional for a master`s project in the industry (unlike the engineering internship agreement, which is mandatory for an internship in a company separate from the master`s project). The completed master`s project must be submitted in the form of a master`s thesis. This master`s thesis must be defended orally before your MTE supervisor and your business manager to be validated. Compulsory internships for engineering students are covered by a tripartite agreement.

Once the student has found an internship, he must have an agreement signed by the three parties concerned (society, school, students) and provide an original copy to each signatory.
